VirtualDub - So what's all the fuss about...?

Let's talk about VirtualDub

This site is constantly being updated. Feel free to check it out and have a look around. Do come back soon to see the progress we've made, though.
(Better still why not subscribe to our Free Video Editing eZine and be informed when things get updated.

VirtualDub is one of those weird video editors that doesn't actually edit video. By that I mean you can't start with a whole load of video clips and splice them together to create a movie.
Vi-Dub is more a pre and post -video processor. This means it allows you to take edited video and do amazing things to it.

Some of the uses of Vi-Dub are:

- Transcoding files from one format to another (ie taking DVD files and compressing them down into xVid or some other format)
- Reads and writes AVI2 (OpenDML) and multi-segment AVI clips.
- Integrated MPEG-1 and Motion-JPEG decoders.
- Remove and replace audio tracks without touching the video.
- Extensive video filter set, including blur, sharpen, emboss, smooth, 3x3 convolution, flip, resize rotate, brightness/contrast, levels, deinterlace, and threshold.
- Bilinear and bicubic resampling -- no blocky resizes or rotates here.
- Decompress and recompress both audio and video.
- Remove segments of a video clip and save the rest, without recompressing.
- Adjust frame rate, decimate frames, and 3:2 pulldown removal.
- Preview the results, with live audio.

So as you can see it is quite a handy little tool. The one thing I don't, particularly, like about it is the fact that it doesn't have a user interface. Or should I say it has one, but it is not particularly intuitive. It usually works on a command line entry and allows batch processing. This is great if you have a lot of files that need processing - you can create the batch, leave it running overnight and come back in the morning to see it working - but if you're after something a little more interactive then this isn't the tool for you.

Summary

What I do like about it is the fact that it is very flexible, very fast and it's free (of course!). If you can get over the fact that it's not, really timeline based, that it doesn't really have use as an NLE (non linear editor), and that the interface is less than desirable, then this is a very powerful tool to add to your portfolio.
