Open Movie Editor - An open source video editor for Linux

The Open Movie Editor is another addition to the rapidly expanding list of video editors for Linux machines.

It aims to be powerful enough for the amateur movie artist, yet easy to use.

Some of the features include:

  • Node and Curve based filters
  • Built in support for the Frei0r Video Effect Plugin Standard
  • Colour grading
  • Libquicktime and FFMPEG support

The user interface is reasonably well designed with a number of different options available as tabs on the main screen.

The node compositor takes it's queue from some top end special effects tools and enables you to create totally new Effect Filters, by combining a large number of existing filters into new combinations. This concept is simple, yet powerful, and it is used by other Open Source Tools like Blender, and also by high end commercial tools like Apple's Shake

This is actually quite powerful functionality. Look at this example which allows you to  separate the video image into three parts, lighter and darker areas, and everything in the middle. The sliders above then make it possible to adjust "Brightness" and "Saturation" for these parts of the image, and through the alpha channels the image is then recombined and sent to the output. The curves are used to create a mask that only  keeps certain parts of each image:

Output

The output from this tool is varied in terms of supported codecs and wrappers.
There are a number of preset export functions such as
Quicktime 7
Mpeg4 Internet
Mpeg4 Deinterlaced
DV Pal 24 fps
Animation

However the output is customisable and is based on the FFMPEG open source codec project

Summary

*** Not having a Linux machine I have not been able to test this software ***

Given the fact that I have no Linux set-up, the screen shots and proposed functionality of this tool are quite appealing.

Personally I think the UI is a little 'cludgy' and amateurish - which betrays it's origin as a 'written at home' piece of software. However it was - apparently - used on a feature film made in Austria this year called McFinnen and Wallace. The director is the guy who wrote the software. (Unfortunately this site is in German, but the trailer looks impressive).

If you are looking for a free pice of software for your video editing I think you could do a lot worse than this application.

If you try and please let me know what your thoughts are via the contact page.
