What are Editing Software Rankings for these tools?

These editing software rankings are for if you've come here looking to see which is the best editing software (or you've arrived from a site such as "Yahoo Answers"), and asked yourself: "OK so there are lots of tools out there, but which is the best?".

The lists below give a video editing comparison between the best tools for free video editing. The rankings are grouped according to different criteria.

Video editing comparison

NOTE: All these video editing comparison values are my personal opinion based on discussions, reviews and personal experience with the tool. They are also based on recommendations made to people with particular needs and how they have accepted these recommendations.

Have a look at this and see what I mean:

Best overall entry level tool - Macintosh

iMovie
If you're looking for a good, basic tool to use with your Macintosh, this is the one.

Honorable mention: HyperengineAv

Best overall entry level tool - PC

Windows Movie Maker
This is ubiquitous. Every PC has it. It's functional and works. It does have stability and performance issues though, so 'caveat emptor' (can you say that for free things?)

Honorable mention: Videospin

Best Overall entry level tool - Linux

T@B ZS4
It's quirky, but it's free and it works with Linux

Best overall advanced level tool

Blender
An open source tool that works on all platforms. Can do much more than just edit

Honorable mention: VirtualDub

Best for Youtube

Videospin
Has a preset that creates YouTube ready videos!

Best for video processing/converting.

VirtualDub
A multi-function tool for processing video signals. Can convert, edit, apply effects and a dozen other things. Not the easiest to use, but still very good

Honorable mention: DVD Videosoft

Best for special effects

Blender
An open source tool that works on all platforms. Can do much more than just edit!

Best for DVD creation

DVD-Flick
A fairly simple tool that does what you need. Allows you to add additional audio tracks to allow - for example - a directors commentary.

I will attempt to keep this list up to date as more new products come on-line. In the meantime why not subscribe to the blog to hear about the latest updates? Or better still add your name to our Free Video editing eZine by filling in the form below.
