OnLine Video
Editor - There are loads to chose from!
I am a big fan of free stuff (who isn't?) so when I researched an
online
video editor I found loads out there that can help you achieve
your vision.
Here are 3 to look at:
Eyespot:
NOTE:
EYESPOT HAS RECENTLY GONE OUT OF BUSINESS BUT IT'S ASSETS HAVE BEEN
TAKEN OVER BY PIXELFISH WHICH SPECIALISES IN VIDEO PRODUCTION
COMMERCIALLY. I AM LEAVING THE DETAILS HERE FOR THE TIME BEING.
Eyespot
is a 'Mixable' site. This basically means it has functionality
that allows you to take existing videos on the site and re-edit them to
your own satisfaction
They have supplied a set of video/picture and audio from their partners
giving you permission to use this whichever way you wish.
But in addition to that you can upload your own video from your
computer and re-edit that. Supported video formats include
various flavors of Windows Media (wmv, avi, asf), QuickTime (mov, qt),
MPEG (mpg, mp4, vob), Real (rm), Mobile (3gp, 3g2), DV (dv), Flash
(flv). Supported image formats include JPEG, GIF, BMP and PNG.
Supported audio formats include MP3, Real (rm), AIFF & WAV
(from CDs), MP4/AAC, WMA. Digital Right protected video is not accepted.
You can add effects to your video as well as titles and after editing
you can download the file, Each video can be downloaded in a number of
formats. Those include Mac (QuickTime), PC (Windows Media), iPod
(MPEG-4), PSP (very similar to iPod), and DivX. They're all 640x480
except iPod and PSP, which are 320x240.
Video's can be saved to the site and e-mailed to others - and all your
videos can be made available so that others can 'mix' them as well. You
will need to create a profile and login to use the edit function of
Eyspot although you can view videos without a profile
Jumpcut :
NOTE: JUMPCUT HAS RECENTLY BEEN TERMINATED BY ITS OWNERS, YAHOO. I AM LEAVING THE
DETAILS HERE FOR THE TIME BEING.
Jumpcut
is another 'mixable site where you can re-edit other people's
videos. It works in a very similar way to Eyespot and is powered by
Macromedia Flash (which is why it won't run on Linux machines yet,
officially). The proces is similar to Eyespot in that you upload your
video to their server and edit it there. The largest file size to
upload is 100mb and they support mpg, .mpeg, .mp4, .avi, .mov, .wmv,
.flv, .rm, 3GP for video, .jpg, .gif, .png, .tiff and .bmp for photo
and .aiff, .wav and .ogg for audio.
Files can be uploaded by mail using a specific address you create
within the application but mail uploaded files are marked as 'private'
unless you mark them otherwise on the site.
Again for Jumpcut you will need to create a profile and log-in to use
the application.
Photobucket:
Photobucket
is actually a photo and video sharing website that has
branched out into video editing. If you have a Photbucket account and
have already uploaded video to the site you can take advantage of their
'mixable' option which uses a version of Adobe Premiere Express. While
this isn't as functional a tool as the full Adobe package it does allow
you to add titles, music, transitions and to shorten your clips.
Once you are happy with your video you can publish it back to
photobucket where it can be viewed (and remixed) by others. Your
remixes are limited to 20 minutes in length.
Sites are definitely starting to look at an online video editor as the
way
forward. Although they are not as functional as stand-alone players,
and there are limitations as far as file sizes are concerned. These
tools are worth adding to your free video editing arsenal
A new addition:
Schwup

Schwup is brought to you by the same people who produce Muvee
(a commercial editor). It is web based and focused on folks who have,
say, attended a wedding or been on holiday together. The concept is
that you gather all the video and pictures together on the web and
create a Muvee based on it. It's a great little concept.
