HyperEngineAV

HyperEngineAV is a free Mac editing tool from Arboretum Software

From the web site
Multimedia authoring software for capturing, editing, organizing, processing, and exporting video, audio, and text to create DVD quality movies and slide shows. Features a groundbreaking "trackless" workspace that allows the free manipulation of an unlimited number of video, audio, stills, and text tracks. Editable transitions are created automatically when video clips are dragged on top of each other. The full palette of QuickTime effects is available. HyperEngine-AV comes with twelve studio-quality effects from Arboretum's Hyperprism suite of audio processors. More can be added by purchasing a license, including Ray Gun for cleaning up scratchy vinyl, tape hiss, and hum.
So this is 'the other' free Mac video editing software. It is actually a little bit different to iMovie in that there are two versions of this software: The basic, free version, and the licensed version.

If you purchase the license you get more functionality and different filters and effects.

Features

Hyper tool screen grab 1One of the features of this software is that it does away with the multi-track tmeline concept and replaces it with a trackless set-up. This means that things like audio and video, transitions and effects can be placed randomly across the timeline without being stuck on a particular track in the timelines. It makes for an interesting looking timeline! As you can see by this screen grab I have got a number of clips in the timeline (they have the blue bars on top), with a couple of effects (the orange bars) which effect the clips below them (The red shaded rectangles). Notice that I can 'overlap' the clips both vertically an horizontally, which is not allowed in many other tools. It's a fairly trippy experience using this tool and takes some getting used to.

Overall the screen layout is quite user friendly and clean, with all the usual things you would expect to see on a Mac based system

Summary

I liked this tool. HyperEngineAV has a couple of quirks that take a bit of getting used to, but it is functional and can be extended with the purchase of a license. There is good documentation for it and it appears to be supported as they have released a new version.
